Trust: The Glue That Binds Relationships

Your destiny is tied to your relationship...

Trust is a subject that can change your life, it is the pathway to having meaningful and fulfilling relationships both personally and professionally, which at times can consume most of our time and energy.

I can attest from clients, family members, friends as well as from my own experience, that what matters most as we approach the end of our lives is not the home we live in or the money in the bank…or the car we drive…or the career path we took. What matters most is the quality of our relationships.

The quality of relationship depends on many factors...'trust' is always one of the top 10 attribute for building and maintaining a meaningful relationship. Does trust play a major role in your relationships with others? What can you do to ensure that you are valued in relationships and that you value others?

When I was going through a low season in my career, I became angry and distrustful of others and my ability to make decisions about my future. I waivered. Now I understand why I didn't trust the corporate world. I had been laid off three times within two years, so my relationship with the corporate world was severely damaged. I had to find a way to repair the damage that was done to my self-esteem, I had to let go of the anger and forgive the "system" and most of all, forgive myself for thinking and believing that I was not enough.

Experiencing trust issues

There are all kinds of classes and self-help books on relationships, but none teaches you about the value of maintaining Trust during turbulent times.

When does trust become an issues and how to reslove it

Working together...keeping your promises

Trust becomes an issue when someone betrays you, did not keep a promise or maybe you thought you were the front runner for a promotion…but it was given to someone else. You slowly lose confidence in others. You begin to distrust others and sometimes yourself. If you are not careful you will deplete your trust account.

So, what is Trust?

Trust is confidence, it is kindness and hope in others and somethings. When you trust people, you have confidence in them …in their integrity and their abilities. Take a moment to think of a person with whom you have a high-trust relationship…it could be a spouse, a sibling, a friend, a customer or a parent. What’s it like? How does it feel? How well do you communicate?

Now think about a person with whom you have a low-trust relationship. This person could be a coworker or a family member. What’s it like? How does it feel? How well do you communicate?

This is the season of joy and goodwill toward others...be good to who you are and give yourself the gift of trust. Tis' the season to let go, to forgive, to move on and trust again.

Remember, trust is the glue that binds relationship. To maintain trust in your relationship follow these 10 simple rules:

  1. Keep your promises and do what you say

  2. Keep the line of communication opened

  3. Tell the truth

  4. If you are wrong, own it

  5. Value your relationships

  6. Be a person of excellence and live with integrity

  7. Speak from the heart

  8. Be Kind, courteous and caring

  9. Practice the golden rule

  10. Let go…forgive…and move on

Your destiny is tied to your relationships…Great relationships requires trust. Don’t get stuck in the WHY ME when something doesn’t go as planned; accept it, embrace it, learn from it and move on.
